SOIL SHEAR STRENGTH COMPRESSION-TEST DEVICE
The SOIL SHEAR STRENGTH COMPRESSION-TEST DEVICE basically consists of three components.The mechanical part is composed of the column unit applying the load (compression) on the soil specimen by means of a spindle and a spindle shearing drive. The electronical part provides data acquisition and processing as well as controls for sensors and drive. The computer is responsible for controlling the device and data acquisition and processing. The load application is done by a step motor. In order to activate or deactivate the load application the column unit can move at a maximum speed of 50 mm/min. The start-up speed when applying the load may range from 0.1 to 2.5 mm/min. The pressure for a specimen of a diameter of Ø 100 mm may range from 10 kPa to 800 kPa. The speed during the shearing process may range from 0.1 – 2.0 mm. The shearing drive unit can be moved at a maximum speed of 50 mm/min and positioned. The reference variable of the closed-loop system is a force sensor with a measuring range of 10 kN. The friction force of the soil specimen during the shearing process is monitored by a force sensor with a measuring range of 5 kN. The settlement of the soil specimen is monitored by a potentiometric displacement tracer. A tensiometer is connected to a pressure transducer which monitors the current water pressure.
The software features the export of the measuring files to ASCII format. Moreover the software also features offset calibration for the sensors and controls for the drive.
